RENOWN SURGEON DEVELOPS BIOABSORBABLE SURGICAL SCREW THAT MAY REPLACE TITANIUM IN FACIAL SURGERIES
San Diego, California, January 11, 2002—–Dr. Dennis Nigro, Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeon, has developed a bioabsorbable screw for use in facial plastic and reconstructive surgery. This new surgical screw was developed to replace traditional titanium screws utilized to secure tissue to the bone or hard tissue in facial surgeries. Surgeons worldwide are using the new bioabsorbable screw for its advantages in facial plastic and reconstructive surgery. Nigro?s bioabsorbable screw goes beyond the limitations of titanium screws for specialized facial surgeries and provides benefits to both the surgeon and patient.
?This is a significant advancement for cosmetic and reconstructive surgery of the face,? says Nigro. The bioabsorbable screw allows the newly positioned tissue a much longer period to attach itself to the bone or hard tissue. The screw slowly dissolves over a period of three to six months and is completely absorbed by the body versus traditional titanium screws, which must be removed within 10-14 days. What this means is better attachment and far less likelihood of the tissue sagging back to its previous position. The bioabsorbable screw is comprised of a polymer, copolymer, and composite polymer blend. It maintains a specified percentage of its strength within the bone or hard tissue during the healing period.
?By utilizing a bioabsorbable screw in order to support the soft tissue, scar formation on the incision is minimized by diverting tension. Naturally, this results in a much cleaner, smoother, and far less obvious scar,? Nigro states. Many patients avoid facial surgeries simply for fear of the telltale scars. This new invention could potentially eliminate those fears along with the obvious scars.
Dr. Dennis Nigro has been featured in such magazines as Physician, World, People and San Diego Magazine. He?s also received numerous awards for his charitable work with the University of Notre Dame and Fresh Start Surgical Gifts, a non-profit organization that assists underprivileged children suffering from congenital birth defects or deformities. Dr. Nigro is the founder and Chairperson of Fresh Start Surgical Gifts.
