A Lollipop that Prevents Cavities?
Hard to believe, but technology has come this far. Or maybe it hasn’t…a UCLA researcher, Wenyuan Shi, created orange-flavored sugarless lollipops that stop tooth decay by temporarily disabling the bacteria that causes it.
A research study was conducted by the company that is making these lollipops to prove that they work. In the study people had two of these lollipops a day per ten days; the results were that the lollipops killed 80%-90% of the bacteria that causes cavities. However, this study was done by the people who actually make the lollipops and they never even published it. An independent study has yet to come out to finally prove the facts.

September 2, 2004 — Are Antioxidants the Key to Living Longer?
The USDA and Harvard School of Public Health recommend that Americans eat a minimum of five servings of fruit and vegetables daily in order to stay sufficiently healthy to prevent aging disease. Fruits and vegetables are a main source of antioxidants which are the natural compounds used by the body to help with the aging process as well as weight control and strengthening the immune system. However, according to an AC Nelson poll of 2,472 people, more than 85% of consumers are not eating the federally recommended minimum of produce servings a day. With consumers falling short of the recommended five to nine servings of produce a day it is suggested that they will have more difficulty in defending their bodies from an increasingly toxic world full of chemicals, polluted air, radiation, smoke, steroids and pesticides. These new studies now entice many to search for strong sources of antioxidants.
To increase health awareness, Tufts University has produced a chart to rate supplemental options for consumers. Oxygen Radical Absorbance Capacity or ORAC has become an advanced scientific method that measures the level of antioxidant protection in food. According to the University?s research the higher the ORAC value, the more beneficial it is for the body. This new standard is already changing the way consumers think about what they eat.
As to date, the highest scoring food on this new ORAC chart is the 7 Essentials, a product manufactured as the complete ?Super Food? by a nutritional company in Texas. A single scoop of 7 Essentials was recorded to contain the antioxidant equivalent of 42 servings of fruits and vegetables and tested a phenomenal score of 21,010 ORAC units per serving (22grams). Most average serving of fruits and vegetables contain approximately 500 ORAC units that equate to 2500 ORAC units daily when consuming the recommended amount. By understanding what ORAC is and how antioxidants help the body, future Americans may be scanning food labels for ORAC Scores as well as calories and carbs.
More information on the ORAC results and the highest scoring antioxidant foods can be found at http://www.e-optimalhealth.com/7essentials/orac.html

Wang MY et al., Morinda citrifolia (Noni): A Literature Review and Recent Advances in Noni Research. Acta Pharmacol Sin. 2002 Dec; 23 (12): 1127-41.
Morinda citrifolia L. (Noni) has been used in folk remedies by Polynesians for over 2000 years, and is reported to have a broad range of therapeutic effects, including antibacterial, antiviral, antifungal, antitumor, antihelmin, analgesic, hypotensive, anti-inflammatory, and immune enhancing effects. Includes data on allergenicity and toxicity, which shows no observed adverse effects (NOAE).

The fruit juice of Morinda citrifolia L. (Noni) contains a polysaccharide-rich substance (noni-ppt) with antitumor activity in the Lewis lung carcinoma (LLC) peritoneal cancinomatosis model. The therapeutic administration of noni-ppt significantly enhanced the duration of survival of inbred syngeneic LLC tumor bearing mice, which seems to suggest that noni-ppt may suppress tumor growth through activation of the host immune system and stimulate the release of certain interleukins and nitric oxide (NO).

Morinda citrifolia was shown to have antimicrobial and antifungal properties against A. niger, C. albicans, E. coli, S. aureus and T. mentagrophytes.
Opinion of the Scientific Committee on Foods on Tahitian Noni? Juice, European Commission. SCF/CS/NF/DOS/18 ADD 2 Final. 11, December 2002.
Sub-chronic and acute oral toxicity studies of Tahitian Noni? Juice measured clinical signs, food consumption, weight gain, hematology, clinical chemistry, selective organ weights, and tissue samples of 55 organs (for histology). The No-Observable-Adverse-Effect-Level (NOAEL) was 80 g/kg which is more than 8% of the animals’ body weight.
B. A. Mueller, et al. Am J Kidney Dis. 2000 Feb; 35(2): 330-2,
They reported that “The potassium concentration in noni juice samples was determined and found to be 56.3 mEq/L, similar to that in orange juice and tomato juice. [and .may be surreptitious source of potassium in patients with renal disease.” Tahitian Noni? Juice is not a significant source of potassium. B. A. Mueller in USA Today, March 28, 2000 retracted his previous conclusion, stating that his analysis was made on a different noni product and not on Tahitian Noni? Juice and the amount of potassium in the brand of noni juice he analyzed in his study was “only 65 milligrams of potassium per 1 ounce serving, as much as you’d get in 2 inches of a banana.”

WASHINGTON February 13, 2004–Directly Young LLC, manufacturer of Serotab?, the first dietary supplement to contain serotonin, today announced that it is releasing the first serotonin supplement designed to meet the needs of women in menopause and those suffering from premenstrual syndrome (PMS). The new product, SeroFem?, will be available in early March in retail outlets and through the company?s website at www.serotoninhealth.com, and is one of a new family of supplements produced by the company targeted to specific health concerns, such as weight-loss, mood, menopause and PMS/PMDD.
Sandi Young, CEO of Directly Young, said ?The recent study published in The Lancet medical journal, which linked an unacceptably high risk of breast cancer recurrence in hormone replacement therapy (HRT) studies of women with a history of breast cancer, adds to a growing list of evidence against the use of HRT to control the symptoms of menopause. SeroFem provides relief from these symptoms safely, and without the side effects of either HRT or the prescription selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRI?s).?
Serotonin is a naturally occurring neurotransmitter, and studies have shown that serotonin imbalance is a leading cause of eating disorders, depression, anxiety, migraine headaches, chronic fatigue, and a variety of other life debilitating symptoms.
Serotonin levels drop dramatically during menopause, due to changes in hormone levels. SeroFem works by helping restore the natural balance of serotonin. SeroFem is effective in controlling many of the symptoms of menopause and PMS including:
?Hot flashes
?Night sweats
?Mood swings
?Irritability
?Sleepless nights
?Binge eating
?Decreased libido
?Headaches
In addition to its proprietary serotonin formula, Serofem contains calcium, soy, black cohash and essential oxidizing vitamins, all ingredients important to women?s health.
Directly Young products contain no ephedra.
SeroFem will be sold in 60-caplet bottles for $29.99. Available without prescription in retail outlets throughout the US, customers can also order Directly Young serotonin products toll free at 1-866-473-7682, and online at www.serotoninhealth.com.

August 7, 2004 — Hoodia Gordonii is a plant native to Southern Africa, being found most commonly in the Kalahari desert. It is a member of the succulent family, and is extremely hard to cultivate, taking years to mature. Recently, it has been discovered that Hoodia Gordonii contains a very powerful molecule that works as an appetite suppressant. This molecule is known as P57.
The native people of the Kalahari Desert, the San Tribe, have used Hoodia Gordonii for centuries, possibly even for thousands of years. The San Tribe is one of the oldest living tribes in the world. They have successfully used Hoodia Gordonii as an appetite and thirst suppressant in times of hunger, or when they needed to travel long distances without eating.
Other tribes in Africa, such as the Anikhwe in Northern Botswana, the Hai Tribe from Northen Namibia, and the Khomani tribe from northwestern South Africa have recorded using Hoodia Gordonii in their tribal rituals, as a medicine and as a food supplement.
The plant appears after summer rainfalls in the following areas; Angola, Botswana, Namibia and South Africa. It can also be found after winter rainfall in Namibia. While there are several types of Hoodia plants spread throughout Africa, Hoodia Gordonii can only be found in Southern Africa.
Mature Hoodia Gordonii plants can reach almost 6 feet in height and they are extremely difficult to cultivate. The plants need temperatures of at least 50 degrees, whether they are in the sun or shade. The appearance of the plant is light green, and it frequently grows in clumps of upright stems.
Currently, several drug companies, such as Pfizer, are investigating Hoodia Gordonii for use as a prescription weight loss drug. Some companies have already invested more than $21 million in hopes to be the first to license P57, the active ingredient in Hoodia Gordonii.
Meanwhile, certain companies have started to market all natural supplements using the ?core? of the Hoodia Gordonii plant. By carefully adding select natural ingredients that compliment the Hoodia effect of curbing hunger pangs, these supplements also encourage a sense of fullness in the stomach. This ?two-prong? attack, offers a more effective supplement that can meet the demands of a modern lifestyle surrounded by snacking and excessive eating.
One of the premier companies producing this kind of supplement is Advanced Diets UK, which obtains its Hoodia Gordonii from authorized farms in Botswana. Currently two formulations of supplements are available, with Diet Tea, Diet Juice, Diet Bars, and Diet Chewing Gum to be released in 2004.
