DiaTrak Announces Completion of IT Hosting Migration
May 9, 2004–DiaTrak announced today that migration of IT hosting from servers in Flint, MI to a new hosting facility in Mountain Park, CA has been completed. The move comes as a reaction to a spike in member acquisition following the institution of a new marketing campaign. Company president, Brent Long, indicated that the new hosting environment provides more bandwidth and guarantees a better uptime percentage than the former hosting facility, but declined to comment on other issues related to the former hosts located in Flint, MI.
“Due to rapid growth following the launch of a new advertising campaign, we were forced to seek out a facility that could handle our increasing bandwidth requirements and provide an acceptable level of connectivity to our members,” said Mr. Long. “We anticipate that the new hosting facility and servers will meet our needs over the course of the next year. Of course, if our marketing continues to exceed expectations we may be forced to upgrade again at an earlier time.”
Another company resource indicated that the membership base has nearly doubled during the first four months of 2004, with approximately 75% of the current membership being in the United States. Marketing campaigns thus far have been directed primarily toward English-speaking patients, but it is rumored that internationalization efforts are underway that will provide both a French and a Spanish version of the site in the near future. Once multi-lingual features are in place, additional marketing will be done to increase membership in France, Spain, Mexico and South America.
DiaTrak is a privately-held diabetes solution company dedicated to providing easy-to-use “anytime, anywhere access” to blood glucose and dosage information for the Diabetic community. August 23, 2004 — Good Samaritan Hospital in Suffern, NY is proud to announce the formation of two new diabetes support groups, which will meet the second Tuesday of each month in the hospital?s boardroom, beginning September 14, 2004. The support group sessions will be offered in both morning and evening sessions will be open to anyone with diabetes from all surrounding communities. The support groups are provided by Good Samaritan Hospital free of charge, as a community service.
?As a whole, according to the American Diabetes Association, there are approximately 18.2 million people in the United States that suffer from diabetes, and consequently, diabetes is one of the leading diagnoses here at Good Samaritan,? noted Kathleen Hay, Director of Nursing for Good Samaritan Hospital. ?While it may not be the leading cause for a hospital visit or inpatient admittance, the numbers do reflect that it is a widespread disease that deserves a good deal of both medical attention and support. Our goal in forming the diabetes support group is not only to provide support and to raise awareness, but more importantly, to help those people who have diabetes to live healthy lives on a daily basis with their disease,? concluded Hay.
The first session, on September 14, will feature an overview of the disease, and discuss why a support group is needed and the benefits that participants will derive from their participation.
The October 12 meeting will recognize National Diabetes Awareness Month with a special presentation from a nationally-recognized authority on diabetes.
Seating is limited for each session and registration is required. To better accommodate the community?s needs, Good Samaritan will offer two programs, at both 11:00 AM and 7:00 PM. For more information or to register please call 1-800-HELP-IN-5.

The socks also include a ventilation panel, inverted toe seam, ?cling-free? stitches, Aegis Anti-Microbial shield to protect against irritation, a Special ?Y? heel and Flexzone, and most important- the non-binding stretch top. Dr. Gideman, a Foot and Ankle specialist at Hickory Orthopedic states, “In the past, I was skeptical about specified diabetic socks and thought they were unnecessary. Now after trying menzies-med foot therapy socks, I can feel the difference in protection and comfort and I would definitely recommend them to my patients.”
People who suffer from diabetes are encouraged to stay fit by exercising. One issue often overlooked during activity is proper footwear. No commentsNew Diabetic Compression sock hits the market in hopes to promote exercise and reduce the risk of Foot Complications with diabetes patients.
Hickory, NC September 13, 2004 — Diabetes affects every aspect of a person?s health, including their feet. menzies-med introduces Dia-Flow, a diabetic support sock that protects the feet while helping to increase circulation. Although menzies-med is not the only medical company to offer a diabetic sock, it is the direct manufacturer and therefore provides the best quality at the most competitive price. Compared to most retailers who sell similar socks for $11.95-$20, menzies-med offers therapeutic relief for a low price of $7.95. We also promote a Buy 5-Get 1 FREE special to help customers $ave. Our 30-day money back guarantee also assures our customers that we stand behind our products and are confident in their satisfaction.
Diabetes causes blood sugar levels to be higher than normal. Over time, this can damage blood vessels and nerves, resulting in a burning pain or loss of feeling in the feet. Diabetic nerve damage is referred to as neuropathy and affects more than 65% of people with diabetes. If you have numbness in your feet and cannot feel pain, its possible to walk around with injuries without noticing and this can lead to more serious problems. About 70% of diabetic foot ulcers are the result of a minor injury in a numb foot. If a foot ulcer is not treated properly, it may lead to amputation. Nearly 54,000 people with diabetes have amputations each year. It is important to take care of your feet, wear comfortable shoes, and choose socks that are comfortable and protective.
Keeping the blood flow to your feet is crucial. The best way to enhance circulation is to stay active. Walking is the best exercise for your feet and your overall health. When walking and exercising, it is important to absorb impact by walking on soft surfaces or wearing cushioned, soft socks. The Dia-Flow sock is made of a soft, Wick-Spun acrylic that helps cushion the foot and prevent blisters. It also features mild compression, which helps to stabilize the sock and increase blood flow. Socks are important in foot care; you can have the most expensive orthotics and the best shoes on the market, but if your socks are not quality, you have wasted valuable time and money.

No commentsCholesterol Drug Prevents Heart Disease in Diabetics
September 8, 2004 — Diabetics can ward off heart disease and live longer by taking the anti-cholesterol drug Lipitor (atorvastatin), even if they do not have particularly high cholesterol levels, a study published on Friday said.
Atorvastatin and other “statin” drugs are normally given to patients with high levels of LDL-cholesterol in their blood, to reduce the risk of heart problems associated with too much of the “bad” cholesterol. But the study, in the British medical journal the Lancet, showed the drug can prevent heart disease and save lives when given to type 2 diabetics even with normal cholesterol levels.
Type 2 diabetes is the most common form of diabetes. In the United States alone it affects 18.2 million people and puts them at greater risk of heart disease and stroke.
In the study, more than 2,800 patients with diabetes were split into two groups. One group was given atorvastatin and the other given placebo pills.
Over nearly four years, the patients who took atorvastatin were 27 percent less likely to die and 37 percent less likely to have a major cardiovascular event such as a heart attack or stroke.
The authors of the project, led by Helen Colhoun of the Department of Epidemiology and Public Health at the Royal Free and University College Medical School in London, concluded the drugs should be given to type 2 diabetics regardless of their cholesterol levels.
“No justification is available for having a particular threshold level of LDL-cholesterol as the sole arbiter of which patients with type 2 diabetes should receive statins,” they wrote.
But in a commentary published alongside the research, Abhimanyu Garg of the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center at Dallas said it was still too early to recommend that all type 2 diabetics go on anti-cholesterol drugs.
“For patients with type 2 diabetes at moderate to low risk of coronary heart disease, maximal lowering of lipids with diet, exercise, weight loss and rigorous glycaemic control must be attempted before considering lipid lowering drugs,” Garg wrote.
Lipitor is used for those who have abnormally high cholesterol levels. When taken together with a low-fat diet, this medicine can effectively reduce LDL cholesterol, commonly referred to as the “bad” cholesterol, triglyceride levels, and total cholesterol, while increasing the HDL, or “good” cholesterol.
