May 22, 2004 — Over 90% of sufferers are infected at birth with parasites that cause ugly skin.

A team of doctors isolated a small unseen parasite called human demodex that can cause people’s complexion to become rough, lumpy and reddish, as well as hair loss, premature aging of the skin, enlarged pores and acne. The parasite looks like a microscopic worm and it feeds off our skin. It takes only 10 days to grow from egg to full size and it multiplies at an extremely rapid rate if not treated properly, leading to acne rosacea, a bizarre type of skin rash that occurs primarily on the face.

It was noted in their studies that babies did not have the parasite at birth. It was only contracted days later when babies were touched by other humans; the infection grows with us as we get older.

January 8 2004–Recently, we have learned a great deal about the aging face. While before, it was thought that the skin becomes more flabby or loose, now we realize that the deep wrinkle formations and hollow areas of the face are greatly due to loss of facial tissue. As we age, fat disappears from the cheek bones, mid face, chin, and lips, and seems to accumulate in the jawline and neck. Other conditions, like trauma, acne scarring, HIV infection or HIV medications can also lead to facial fat loss. Recently, a new technique has been developed to turn back the clock and restore lost fat. The procedure is called microlipoinjection (also known as fat transfer, fat injection, and fat cell transplantation). In this procedure, fat is gently removed from a fatty area, and then meticulously layered in the areas of the face requiring it. The fat graft then takes root in the new area and persists. The injection sites heal with virtually no visible scar. The procedure is performed comfortably and safely with local anesthesia, allowing for a quick recovery. Microlipoinjection can be used to sculpt facial contour and correct certain scars caused by trauma or acne. Accentuating the cheek fat pads can give the appearance of higher cheek bones, while augmenting the chin fat pad creates a strong chin. Microlipoinjection can fill mid face lipodystrophy from HIV or HIV medications. This three dimensional rejuvenation of the face has truly revolutionized the approach to total facial fat contouring.

More about Omeed Memar, M.D., Ph.D.
Dr. Memar graduated from the “M.D.,Ph.D.” program at the University of Texas Medical Branch. Throughout this extensive seven year training program, he gained indepth training in the basic science and clinical elements of medicine. His Ph.D. was in the field of immunopathology of skin, giving him extensive hands-on experience in pathological preparation and examination of skin tissue.

He then moved on to Milwaukee, Wisconsin, where he completed an internship, affording him a wide range of medical and surgical training, including extensive rotations in dermatology, dermatopathology, and head & neck surgery.

Dr. Memar has published in leading journals, co-authored numerous chapters for textbooks, designed medical devices in the field of dermatologic surgery, and presented his research across the country.

He has served as the dermatologic surgeon at Calumet Dermatology Associates, where he performed Mohs micrographic surgery, laser surgery, cosmetic procedures, and other surgeries of the skin. Currently, he is the medical director of Academic Dermatology & Skin Cancer Institute, where he performs Mohs surgery, cosmetic and laser surgery.

Dr. Memar is certified by the American Board of Dermatology, and the American Society for Mohs Surgery.
