ArchWired.com Website Provides Information, Support for Adults in Braces

September 27, 2004 — After a lifetime of crooked teeth, Lynn Schneider got braces at age 41. The California mother of two felt self-conscious about her new metal mouth and wished to commiserate with other adult orthodontic patients. The web was the perfect vehicle, except for one thing: there were no websites specifically for adults in braces! But she didn?t let that stop her; she created the site herself.

The former technical writer began to write a braces blog. Over time, she added content, and soon the site took on a life of its own, with thousands of readers. ?I just wanted to help others and connect with people,? Schneider says. ?People were hungry for frank, honest information about orthodontics. It was astounding,? she says. Each month, she added more and more information. Eventually the site outgrew its blog format and blossomed into a bona fide website called ArchWired.

Since its inception two years ago, ArchWired.com, has secured its niche as the premiere portal for consumer-oriented orthodontic information, with a growing global readership. Each month, ArchWired provides news and information to readers around the world who range in age from 18 to 70. Popular topics include: choosing ceramic versus metal brackets, the impact of braces on dating, braces and pregnancy, and dealing with curry stained ligatures.

?These are not the sort of issues that kids and teens worry about,? Schneider says. ?Adults face coworkers and clients. They have kids, do business travel, have lunch with clients, and go job hunting. For them, two years with a mouth full of metal has a far-reaching impact on their family lives, self-esteem, and careers.? In addition, there is the financial impact. ?Adults are obviously paying for this themselves, so they want to ensure that they?re doing the right thing,? she says.

Some of the site?s content comes from the readers themselves. ?People love to connect with each other and read each other?s stories,? Schneider says. ArchWired includes several suites of pages devoted to reader stories, such as My First Day in Braces, Tales of Woe, Braces Removal Stories, and a reader Photo Gallery. ?Many of our readers have gotten to know each other on the site?s Metal Mouth Message Board. They help and support each other; it?s really touching,? she says. Each month, Schneider updates the site with news, information, features, and reader stories. ?Getting braces is a very emotional subject for adults. It?s a life-changing event for many of these people. Readers constantly send me emails saying how grateful they are that ArchWired exists; how much it helped them muster up the courage to take charge of their appearance and improve their dental health.?

ArchWired does have some professional input, from Richard DePaul, DDS, of Cincinnati, Ohio. Dr. DePaul (whose moniker on Metal Mouth Message Board is DrRick) often answers technical questions. ?Dr. DePaul found the site while surfing the web, and drops in daily to help people,? Schneider says, ?He has been an enormous asset.? In addition, Schneider sometimes consults with her own orthodontist, Adrian Vogt, DDS. Schneider welcomes input from all dental professionals who wish to participate in the site by writing articles or answering Forum questions. There is no charge or commitment for participation. ?The more professional input, the better the information,? Schneider says. ?I like to think of ArchWired as a vital global community.?

The popularity of the site was one inspiration for Schneider?s other venture; a dental hygiene kit she created called DentaKit. The product is sold online at www.dentakit.com. ?I needed a portable hygiene kit, but couldn’t find one that really met my needs, ” Schneider says. She created DentaKit to fill that void. The product is a big hit with adults, and DentaKits have been sold to hundreds of customers as far away as Italy and Japan.

September 22, 2004 — Have you ever seen a person with missing teeth or with teeth of any other color than pure white? What did you think of his/her appearance? You could face a similar situation if you did not have a dental insurance or a proper dental care plan. Remember, keeping your teeth healthy is important for your looks and image.

More importantly, according to the first-ever Surgeon General’s Report on Oral Health in America published in 2000, poor care of your mouth and teeth can affect your general health and well-being throughout your life. Although many would prefer to take the observation casually, this is something everyone needs to face up to even if it means reducing or giving up some of your favorite pass times like use of tobacco and consumption of alcohol or switching over to better dietary habits.

Significantly, everyone recognizes the need for medical insurances to ensure access to good health care, but too often good dental care is neglected because of the lack of dental insurance. Many people overlook, or just cannot afford, regular check-ups and early treatments. However, if you wait until a dental problem is serious; it’s bound to cost you more both in terms of dollars and your oral health. Don’t be one of them who have learnt it the hard way that a hole in the tooth can put a bigger hole in the wallet.

We all are aware of the fact that dental insurance provides us with an effective way to manage the rising costs of dental care, and removes many of the excuses we all come up with for why not to see a dentist. Most of us also know that dental plans usually cover a wide range of services, including preventive care, emergency care, and procedures such as crowns, root canals, bridge prosthetic, orthodontics, oral surgery, and more. However, what most people are still ignorant about is discount dental plans.

Discount dental plans that are being offered by some of the companies across the world are being considered as a viable alternative to dental indemnity policies. These companies have thousands of listed dentists and offer a wide range of services, including dental treatment, insurance and even forethought on issues related to teeth problems at affordable prices in most cities and towns. Once you enroll as a member of any of these plans, you are entitled to all kinds of dental consultancy and treatment from the listed dentists for a period of time at a discounted cost. If you are a member of such a dental plan, it is likely that you will see the dentist sooner upon discovering some tooth pain, which can end up saving you a lot of pain and money in the long run.

So why wait till you really wither owing to tooth ache? Friends don’t let friends loose their teeth and get ugly, so make sure you and everybody you care about gets a proper discount dental plan before it’s too late! Log on to Dental-Plans-America.com.

Ozone treatment in Minimal Intervention Dentistry

February 29, 2004–Dental ozone treatment has arrived , e.g. with the cost-effective unit OZI-CARE from O3(Pty)Ltd.
Research for tooth treatment has been pioneered by the University of Belfast/Ireland and showed that Ozone interferes with the metabolism of bacterium cells, most likely through inhibiting and blocking the operation of the enzymatic control system. A sufficient amount of tri-atomic oxygen breaks through the cell membrane, and this leads to the destruction of the bacteria.
On this basis minimal invasive and less threatening dental treatment, e.g. caries arrest or stabilization is possible through ozone exposure, alone.

Two National Dental Trade Associations Unify, Share Resources through Philadelphia Management Company

JPhiladelphia, PA July 10, 2004 — The members of the Dental Trade Alliance (DTA), a Fernley & Fernley-managed trade association, and American Dental Trade Association (ADTA) have approved a plan to consolidate the two organizations into one unified North American association. The unified association will be named the Dental Trade Alliance (DTA) and will be legally established on August 1, 2004, applying for 501(c)(6) status immediately.

In separate meetings on June 29th, the members of both groups overwhelmingly approved the plan to establish the new dental trade organization. Approval of the consolidation plan by the members included election of a slate of officers for the DTA and a new Board of Directors, with equal numbers of representatives from both existing organizations.

Members in good standing from both associations automatically become members of the unified Dental Trade Alliance. The existing programs and services of both organizations will continue to be available to members.

After 72 years of the dental industry being represented by two trade associations, this unification means shared services and one large voice of representation for the industry before the dental profession, government, and institutions. This is an overwhelming opportunity to grow the potential for all stakeholders involved in oral health care.

?The outcome of a unification between these two key industry associations was weighed heavily,? said Carolyn Van Eck, DTA President. ?The positive feedback from all members and the leadership, however, reinforced that this was the right decision for our industry. The support DTA received from Fernley & Fernley throughout this entire process was invaluable.?

The unification also means shared resources, both financial and human, for the association offices of ADTA and DTA. Attracting volunteer interest for both organizations from companies that were members of both was a challenge over the last 10 years, but this should subside with the unification.

For Fernley & Fernley, the unification means the opportunity to provide needed resources and services to a remote client ? the unified DTA will retain their offices in Alexandria, VA for the current time. They then plan to sell their building and relocate to other offices within the Washington, DC area. DTA Executive Kathy LaMar will remain a liaison for DTA from the Fernley offices in Philadelphia.

Historical Background
The Dental Trade Alliance, formerly the Dental Manufacturers of America, Inc., is a trade association of more than 200 U.S. dental product manufacturers, distributors, laboratories and dental market service providers. Founded in 1932 to represent the interests of the dental manufacturer, the DTA leadership saw the need in early 2000 to promote the interests of all stakeholders in the dental industry and opened its doors to industry partners and changed its name to the Dental Trade Alliance (DTA). Through quality education and a host of other world class services, the DTA is facilitating worldwide dental industry growth while enhancing its members’ competitive advantage.

The mission of the American Dental Trade Association is to represent and promote the interests of its dental trade members, to support the advancement of oral care for all Americans, to provide services which strengthen members’ business and to provide a forum for the exchange of ideas and information in the dental industry. The ADTA is the oldest and largest trade association representing the dental industry in the United States. Founded in 1882, its membership consists of dental distributors, laboratories, and manufacturers of supplies and equipment used by the dental team. The single purpose of the ADTA is to increase the efficiency with which members operate while specifically recognizing the right of each member to determine independently their own business policies.

Fernley & Fernley, Inc. is a fourth generation family firm in the association management business representing 25 trade associations and professional societies. Fernley & Fernley holds the distinction of being among the first to receive national accreditation from the International Association of Association Management Companies (IAAMC) and the American Society of Association Executives (ASAE) and is the longest established Association Management Company in the country. Throughout the years, Fernley & Fernley has maintained a solid reputation as a leader within the association management field and in the wide spectrum of industries it serves.
