Second depth-perception method in brain
Its common knowledge that humans and other animals are able to visually judge depth because we have two eyes and the brain compares the images from each. But we can also judge depth with only one eye, and researchers have been searching for how the brain accomplishes that feat. Now, a team led by a scientist at the University of Rochester believes it has discovered the answer in a small part of the brain that processes both the image from a single eye and also with the motion of our bodies……..

Investigators at Hospital for Special Surgery have identified a new mechanism involved in the pathogenesis of inflammatory diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis. The mechanism may also shed some light on why gene treatment experiments that use adenoviruses to deliver genes to humans have run into problems. The study will appear online on March 16 in the journal Nature Immunology……..

Aerotech Laboratories Fights Bioterrorism- BTOX Division Provides Clinical Anthrax Testing
Phoenix, AZ
Aerotech Laboratories is strengthening America?s frontline against bioterrorism by screening nasal swabs for Bacillus anthracis, the microbial agent that causes anthrax. Following a successful audit in November 2002, Aerotech?s BTOX Laboratories division received a Certificate of Compliance from CLIA (Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments). The CLIA certification allows BTOX to perform exposure testing for asymptomatic patients who believe they have been exposed to B. anthracis. It also allows BTOX to apply for membership to the CDC?s Laboratory Response Network, a key group that detects and identifies bioterrorist attacks and bioterrorism agents.
Jean Flemming, a BTOX analyst, explained the significance of this certification. ?If there is another [bioterrorist event, we will analyze both environmental and clinical samples. Our clients will know not only whether or not they have B. anthracis in the environment, but also who might have been exposed.?
All laboratories that perform clinical testing must be certified through CLIA. According to the CLIA General Program Description, this certification is meant ?to ensure the accuracy, reliability and timeliness of patient test results?. The certification process differs slightly depending on the type of tests performed. Due to the complexity of clinical anthrax testing, BTOX was required to follow the more lengthy process of applying for certification as well as receiving a state inspection survey.
In addition to the clinical anthrax screens, BTOX analyzes environmental samples for a variety of biological warfare agents. Procedures are in place to screen clinical samples for other bioterrorist organisms if the need arises.

e-MDs Selected as Finalist for TEPR’s CDC Challenge
e-MDs has been selected by the Medical Record Institute as a finalist for this year’s Clinical Documentation Challenge to be held at the TEPR conference this May. The challenge gives audience members an opportunity to see a select list of the leading EMR systems in action. This year’s challenge not only focuses on encounter documentation efficiency, but also has been expanded to highlight the effectiveness of clinical documentation and how it can be used to enhance the quality of care, improve outcome measurement, and help facilitate patient health maintenance.
“We find this to be one of the more valuable sessions occurring at the TEPR conference.” said David Winn, M.D., CEO and Founder of e-MDs. “It is a great way for physicians to see various EMR systems in succession, and we are especially pleased to see that the committee has expanded the challenge to incorporate additional criteria with more emphasis on the clinical effectiveness of EMR systems. We feel our intuitive design and single screen encounter documentation methodology, combined with our built in clinical protocols, will shine in this type of analysis. There are many good systems participating this year and it should prove to be quite informative for all who attend.”
One of the company’s users will be participating in the challenge and will be responsible for exhibiting the software. “As opposed to the traditional method of using a salesperson to demonstrate the software, we felt having a physician and user of our software would be more effective and useful for the audience.” said Joel Andersen, Vice President of Sales and Marketing at e-MDs. “The committee’s goal is to attempt to mimic a real world scenario, and we feel having one of our physician clients participate aids in that endeavor.”

HOW TO GET THE MOST OUT OF YOUR DOCTOR’S VISIT
1.) Be the first patient in the morning or the first patient after lunch.
2). Rehearse your concerns so that when you’re in the doctor’s office your needs will be
articulated in a clear and concise way.
3.) Take a friend or relative with you for support and to help you retain any technical information.
4.) Ask if you can tape record the visit. Most people forget 80% by the time they leave the
parking lot. About 95% is forgotten by the time they get home.
5.) Be clear as to the purpose of your visit.
Explain the problem, ask questions, get answers, and find solutions.
6.) Be assertive.
Don’t be afraid to question your doctor if you feel your concerns are not being addressed.
7.) Ask about possible reactions with medications and include all over-the-counter medications.
Find out if there are any new or alternative prescriptions available.
8.) Obtain copies of all labs test, x-rays, and reports from specialists.
Make sure if you see more than one doctor that they are all communicating with each other.
Knowledge is power and you are your own best health advocate.
9.) Make sure you walk away with a healing plan that you find acceptable.
10) Always ask your doctor, and yourself, what you can do.
Lifestyle modification including nutrition, exercise, and stress management, is the most
powerful resource we have to maximize our health and longevity.
